Hogwarts Legacy is an action Role Playing Game that takes place within the Harry Potter world. It takes place in the late 1800s, before the events of the main story, but still utilizes all of the wizarding spells and settings to which you have become accustomed. As noted by game developers, this game "charts new territory," essentially making it a brand new story that takes place within the larger Harry Potter universe. The game is also expected to fully stick to already established lore and stories within the Harry Potter world.

The game is expected to be released at some point in 2021, and as such, much of what is known about the game is purely speculative. However, some information is known, based on reviews that have occurred, leaked information, and write-ups released by WB Games.

First, as noted above, the game will take place in the Hogwarts universe. It is billed as an immersive RPG that will allow players to access all facets of the Harry Potter Wizarding World, including many of its legendary settings and story locations. This includes the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village.

In the game, players will play a Hogwarts student and will be able to pick a home and learn wizarding lessons, including spells, potions, and more. As such, players will essentially have the chance to recreate the experience of the "average" Hogwarts student. There is also expected to be a morality system in play during the game, with the system changing based on choices and actions made by the player.

An exact release date is as yet unknown beyond 2021. However, the game is expected to be released on computers, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and the Xbox X/S.

The secrecy which surrounds this game is not complete. Gameplay footage was leaked in 2018 which showed a player moving in Hogwarts locations. It also showed the player using well-known Hogwarts spells to defeat enemies. The footage allegedly came from a survey group and was taken down by Warner Brothers. That same footage resulted in a brief description of the plot, which alleges that you play as a 5th-year student with unique magical abilities, ultimately culminating with your character having the fate of the entire wizarding world within your grasp.

Like many RPGs, this game appears to have a class system in which you can be one of eight different wizarding types. You will also get to build relationships with other players, learn magic via a unique magic system, and explore the wizarding world.

As noted by the WB Games FAQs page, J.K. Rowling is not "directly involved" with the game. This statement came out in response to the controversy engendered by Rowling after her anti-trans comments.
